IELTS Overview

International English Language Testing system (IELTS) evaluates the language proficiency of an individual aspiring to avail education or employment in the countries where English is majorly used for communication.
It is jointly governed by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.

There are 2 (two) types of IELTS:

  • Academic: should be given if planning to study further.
  • General: if applying for PR.

IELTS exam is conducted 4-5 times every month.
The test score is valid for 2 years.

Listening:

It consists of four sections, each with 1 recording. Each recording comprises of ten questions. The test taker can hear the recording only once. The questions are designed in such a way that their answers appear in order when the recording is played.

Time : 30 minutes

Type of Task:

Different questions are asked from the following:

  • Multiple Choice
  • Matching
  • Labelling a map, plan or a diagram
  • Form completion
  • Table completion

Note: Extra 10 minutes are provided to transfer answers onto the answer sheet.

Reading:

It consists of three passages. These passages usually cover topics of general interest.

  • Multiple Choice
  • Identifying information [True/False/Not Given]
  • Identifying writer’s claims/views
  • Matching information, headings, features, sentence endings

Note: Passages are taken from authentic sources like books, magazines, journals and newspapers.

Speaking:

It consists of three parts . It is conducted by a trained examiner. The Speaking test of every test taker is recorded.

  • Part 1: Introduction and Interview
  • Part 2: Long Turn
  • Part 3: Discussion

Time : 11-14 minutes

Type of Task:

Different questions are asked from the following:

  • Part 1: General questions on familiar topics like family, friends, home, hobbies or work.
  • Part 2: The examiner hands over a task card to you. You need to speak on the topic given in the cue card. After that the examiner asks questions on the same topic.
  • Part 3: The examiner discusses the topic given in Part 2 in detail with you.

Writing:

It consists of two compulsory tasks and it must be answered as per the given instructions.

Type of Task:

Questions are asked in following form:

  • Task 1: You are supposed to describe the provided diagram or data (graph, table, chart) in at least 150 words. You must spend about 20 minutes on this task.
  • Task 2: You are given a point of view, argument or a problem. You need to present a solution to the problem, justify an opinion, present contrast evidences, evaluate ideas or argument in at least 250 words. You must spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Duolingo Overview

The Duolingo English Test is a modern language proficiency tool designed for today’s international students and institutions. It provides an English proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample in a convenient, efficient, and secure testing environment.

Details: Duolingo consists 4 modules:

1. Literacy 2. Comprehension 3. Conversation 4. Production

It is an online exam that lasts minimum 48 minutes to an hour. There is no need to pre-book the exam; test takers can book their exam at any time and appear from any location.
It is less expensive than other English proficiency exams, with fees of 3380 Rs. ($49).
It’s an intriguing exam because, unlike IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL, it contains a variety of questions.

Each test taker’s proficiency is reported as a holistic score on a scale from 10 – 160

✅Can use language effectively and flexibly for the majority of social, academic, and professional purposes.

NOTE: A test score in the range of 90-115 would be equivalent to IELTS 6.5 band overall
